Alright

The song was a bit repetetive, though your melodies were actually quite cool, a little variation and dynamics goes a long way.

The saw lead made things a little more interesting (good work with the filter), but I had to wait till half way through the song for it to kick in.

Drumwork fit the song well. Perhaps a few small fills in places to liven things up?

All in all the song isnt bad, but it isnt really good either. I have heard so many generic fruity-tracks with the exact same instruments and repetetivness.. Fruityloops can own, but in many cases it just encourages simple, pattern orientated music.

Best of luck with future works.

Syntrus responds:

thx

Quality?

What's the deal with the 99kb/s?

The song was quite good, but I think the melody needed to be something more stable. The up-down-up-down filter on that synth got a bit irritating after a while.

Drumwork was nice and solid, with some cool fills. The bass went along with the drums pretty comfortably, though the entire song is just sorta the same. Dynamics + good song = great song.

attemptedperfection responds:

Thanks for the review!
according to the contest rules, the given melody had to be prominent, so I didn't want to stray too far from it, hence the lack of diversity. but I can see your point about the filter; I'll be more careful about that in the future. As for the 99kb/s, that may be because of my mp3 encoder, or possibly my soundcard... still trying to figure that one out...
anyway, thanks again for the review!

Running!

What's going on? Why hasn't anyone left a review for poor Solus' entry!?

Don't worry- I love you enough to do so.

It's funny, you were one of the first artists I listened to on this site :P I think the track was 'Half a Star'. I was like "wow, is this what people on New-grounds do? I thought everyone was a trial version fruity-bitch."

Anyway, this track was very nice. But where was the running? It needed some drums to drive it along. I guess the bass sorta did that job, but everyone loves a nice kick.

SolusLunes responds:

Unfortunately, I AM stuck with FL at the moment, until I can procure a copy of Reason. With this track, I tried to keep it as minimalist as I could, so I didn't want anything to excess (like what a kick would do or drums, etc.) but now that I think about it, it probably would have helped. :p

Ah well, it's a bit late for that though :D

Jumbled.

It seemed like the instruments were stepping on one another in parts (near the start) but it was all ok after a while. The song sorta straightened itself out.

Those toms were way too bass-heavy.
Give your drums some EQ-action.

The little section at half-way was very nice, the song definately does sorta bring images of melting ice to the mind.

Unlike my music, where it's melting flesh :P

ListenToMyMusic responds:

I did notice the extreme bass on the toms after I turned up my woofer. Should of figured that out before I submitted, oh, well. Also I think that one instrument in the beggining was to paddy. We'll see what the judges think.

Well layered

Well, it's incredibly generic trance music. But it still sounds very good. All the instruments fit together well and the look cycle doesnt seem too broken.

I'll keep an eye out for more stuff by you :)

Size limit :(

Too bad about the size limit, I would have liked to hear the full song. But I guess this is better than lowering quality :P

You have a great song here, the square-y lead was especially cool!

Hail basic waves!

dj-padman1 responds:

thanks mr! I hail basic waves too. Especially if they're degraded to gameboy speaker quality! yes!

DnB?

This track is drum and bass, not techno.

That aside- it is still a very cool sounding song.
People seem to give garageband shit because it is just about throwing loops together- but so what, if you can use it to make cool music- great!

CjienX responds:

ya well i wasn't sure what it was at the time, and techno is a pretty general genre.

garageband isn't just about putting loops together, on my old song thats all i did, but alot of hte loops in this song were mine except 1 snyth and a couple drum fills.

anyway ty for the comment.

Dont ruin the 'mystique'

I saw the name 'Xylene' and was like "WOW, What a cool name!"

Then you tell me it is just an ingredient in spray paint and the sense of mystique around the song is broken before I hear it!

Pointless comments aside, this is a very nice track. I made trance songs for a very long time, then discovered that they were just techno songs. It is very embarrasing to be told this.

Anyway, I've heard many kinds of trance on NG, this style I really like.

I will keep an eye out for more works by you in the future :)

FoxDye responds:

Thanks a bunch for the feedback. To be honest, I'm fairly unsure about what makes a trance track and techno tracks. (I'm not even sure of the many styles of trance either) I'm glad you like it, and I'll have to keep in mind that I should keep the origins of my low rate titles to myself. lol

Nice work!

The bass is a little over the top, maybe EQ that a little bit and at times your samples are a bit too jumbled.

I didn't know ACID was a sequencing program? So I guess you are just throwing samples down- perhaps try using Fruityloops or Reason. ACID is more for recording sounds.

Fruityloops is said to be easier software to use, but I use Reason and am pleased with how my music turns out.

Fp-3urton responds:

Thanks for the review

Its my first experience with Acid it sure it need more work iam working on that ! =)

Nicely done.

The track is well put together, and your drumwork is solid. Though it all sounds very synthetic- I suggest putting a few effects over your drums at the least.

Otherwise the only other problem I had was that you encoded this to 320kb/s! For the audio portal this is just blatant quality overkill. 128kb/s stereo is good enough for any song that will be listened to over the net (or downloaded).

You will find that you will be able to fit ALOT more into the 4MB limit this way, also.

EternalDissonance responds:

thanks about the drumwork... like i said, this was an experimental track, and i think it went quite well.
You caught me! What I do when I'm converting the file from Fruity Loops into Mp3 format is crank up the bitrate until i go over 4 MB. For longer songs I make in the future (once i get a keyboard), yes, I will kill the quality. But thanks for the advice anyway.
